On the iPhone in the UK with O2

Well, it looks like I was a little off with my predictions about what would happen in last Tuesday’s Apple media event in London.

I essentially looks like I was expecting a bit of a bargain, when in fact we’re getting quite the opposite.

Most notable differences between the US and UK plans are the fact that you get shit all minutes, especially on the £35/month plan. On top of the lack of minutes, though, is the fact that in the US on AT&T you get both unlimited calls to other mobiles and rollover minutes, either of which would be very nice.

I suspect it wouldn’t be hard for O2 to do rollover minutes, but they’re just too tight-fisted.

Steve Jobs was right when he said “it’s more expensive to do business over here”, but it’s more expensive by about 10%, and these plans certainly do not reflect that. I’m not even sure it is more expensive if you’re an American company, because the dollar is so cheap at the moment they should be able to export at a cheaper price, if anything.

Of note, however, and a nice additional feature, is the free, unlimited Wi-Fi access in public places from The Cloud wireless network. There’s a few of these in the UK, and I take it as a compensation for having to literally downgrade to the rubbish EDGE network (which I don’t think ever existed in the UK).

Oh well, I’m still going to get an iPhone, but I don’t think many others will right away; it costs an arm and a leg!!
