I was strolling up Park Street in Bristol today, having a look in a few of the shops.
One of my favourite shops, which I never buy anything from because I need nothing within it’s walls, is Bristol Guild. It’s one of those shops with loads of bits and bobs and is generally quite arty and expensive.
Today it dawned upon me, while I was looking at some lovely cups (I don’t drink from cups much), what great colour design they had. I took a shot with my mobile phone.
I continued to explore the shop with an eye out for good colour schemes. The place is packed full of them, largely because Guild offer quite ornate crockery (again, not my kind of crockery).
For your enjoyment, below is an image to show you exactly what I mean.
Perhaps it’s time designers stop looking for photographs to mooch colour schemes off of and start looking at everyday objects and products. They show you very quickly if colours work or not, have colours which are easier to turn into a palette, and genuinely help the shopping experience.
Also, it means you actually use the phone on your camera.

If you are taking a photo with your phone…. isn’t that the same as leeching a colour scheme off any other photograph, (but without the accurate colour reproduction because you are using a mobile phone)
Designer so take inspiration from everday objects, also nature etc. If we all took our inspiration from photos of other peoples interiors everything would be the same!!
@ Anne: I see what you’re saying, but designing websites is a little different from designing plates. (Or, at least I hope it is!)
Please i need a blue colour scheme for my LG7100 mobile phone. Thanks.
