Hot on the heels of the highly successful LG Chocolate Mobile Phone, LG is adding a completely new style of handset to their Black Label series of mobile phones — the LG Shine KE970.
LG seem to have come a long way with this new model, which sports a completely different build style and is, overall, far more advanced than their Chocolate KG800.
Hardware
It’s brilliant to see that LG have moved away from the unresponsive touch-pad buttons of the Chocolate KG800 and towards solid buttons which are much more usable and won’t break down or freak out after a few months.
LG has also added a good scroll wheel to the device on the main body, just under the screen. This becomes your main navigational tool, and is an excellent way of finding what you want on the device. It makes a big difference to have this when, say, searching through your contact list.
Although the scroll wheel isn’t perfectly refined, and you might inadvertently scroll a little too much every now and then, it is a welcome addition. You’ll quickly learn to love it. Two little buttons accompany the scroll wheel directly on the right and left, which effectively turn it into up-down-left-right scrolling pad when the software allows it.
The scroll wheel is also a press-down button, which often acts as the main ‘select’ button.
Other buttons lie along the right-hand side of the phone, where there is a noticeable lack of a ‘cancel-and-exit’ button which came in handy with the LG Chocolate. Now they’ve decided to hide it away on a slide-down keypad, which can be a little fustrating. Nevertheless, the camera and MP3 player now have their separate buttons on the side, which makes it much easier to quickly take a snap.
Audio call quality on the LG Shine is great, when you’re able to get a signal. One of the problems I’m having with this phone is it’s unusually poor reception of signal in low-signal areas, which is only made worse by it not updating it’s read-out of signal strength often. It can make using the phone a little stressful when you know there is signal where you are but it doesn’t pick any up.
The screen is beautiful at 240×360 2.2-inch, which is a very pixel-dense display and makes for much better on-screen graphics. It is the same resolution as an iPod 5G screen, but slightly smaller. It’s perfectly easy to use it in almost any indoor environment, but outside on a bright day you might have to strain your eyes a little to see the screen.
The camera is all right – it can do a decent resolution image in broad daylight without many problems, although (typically of 99% of mobile phone cameras) it’s more or less rubbish. LG really can’t do much about this, it’s a physics thing. They’ve made a phone with a camera, not a camera with a phone (such as the Sony CyberShot, which is actually a very competent camera). They have, however, made a slight design mistake by putting the camera on the outside, rather than hiding it away with a slide. This has already made grease gather on the lens, making pictures blurry.
Finally, through the power/data connector on the side of the phone (which is hidden by an improved pivot-based flap this time), you can plug the Shine into your computer and it behaves the same as a USB flash device, which makes it really easy to put music or take photos off of it. You can also upgrade the 50MB internal memory with a MicroSD card.
Software
The software phone come on is, in my opinion, crucial to the performance of the device. Specifications are meaningless unless the phone’s software makes it easy to use and functional.
I am extremely pleased to say that the LG Shine shows great improvement in its software when compared with the LG Chocolate.
The general interface of the phone is great thanks to good use of the scroll wheel and a very nice system font. The font is anti-aliased and looks great in a wide variety of sizes, while the scroll wheel makes it so much easier to navigate through the phone (especially when dealing with long contacts lists).
Overall, LG have produced an interface with makes far more sense, and you’ll notice this as soon as you start to use the device.
Calling is a simple affair, but the LG Shine has brought some nice extra in-call features to the party, with a speakerphone, call holding, in-call text messaging, in-call contacts browsing and, most notably, call recording. Call recording can be mighty useful sometimes, so it’s great to see the feature offered up. All of these features, however, can make you an awful lot more productive with the phone if you embrace them.
Texting with the KE970 is again a nicer affair… they sort of messed it up with the LG Chocolate by crippling text input slightly, but with the LG Shine text messaging is easy and fun. Seemingly improved T9 texting, along with being able to scroll through predictive text offerings makes it much easier to bash out a message. They’ve also fixed their unusual capitalisation button. Your texts also look lovely on the screen in the anti-aliased typeface.
You’re still able to text up to six people in one go, but the interface for this has degraded slightly – it’s no longer as easy to add people, but it’s by no means crippling.
Contact management in the phone sees some great improvements. I’m keeping all of my contacts on my SIM card just in case, but the Shine offers the ability to copy one or all contacts to or from the SIM, and will even delete the old copy to keep your address book in shape. No syncing with my Mac, though.
The media browser is great. As well as doing photos, 3G video and audio, it will also display Macromedia Flash files, Microsoft Office .DOC, .PPT and .XLS files and even PDFs (although it crashed when I opened an 8-page one). You can print via Bluetooth and do a slideshow.
Tools available include an single-setting alarm clock, a calendar which is benefits from the scroll wheel greatly, a calculator with good scientific functions, a stopwatch which fails when you exit that specific function, a good unit converter and a very unusual Word Clock app that looks remarkably cool.
The camera software is quite good, and gives you some great options such as focus metering and white balance, along with some colour effects and, usefully, where you want the photo saved. It feels a little bit too laggy in general for me, though (although I do regularly use a DSLR so I would feel that).
Generally the scroll wheel is really useful, but it can feel a little slow at times. Apart from in the contacts list, it doesn’t really respond as fast as you might like it to, which can be a little awkward. At most it will mean you over/under-scroll (you really feel this in the camera), which in a way undoes it’s ease-of-use benefits, but overall it’s a nice touch. The one list I can think of where it performs as you want it to is the contacts list (and thank goodness, because if it didn’t I don’t think I’d be very happy).
Finally, the KE970’s web browser sports some pleasantly surprising improvements that made me rather happy. The scroll wheel, larger screen and anti-aliased fonts make the interface far superior to the LG Chocolate and generally lovely to use. Cookies are also accepted now, which means it’s easy to quickly log back into your favourite mobile services.
Personally, I use Facebook Mobile a lot when I’m in boring lectures, and their mobile site is getting better and better. With this new browser it’s simply excellent.
Style
The LG Shine and the LG Chocolate take very different approaches to their style. While they both go for simplistic minimalist designs, the LG Chocolate looks a lot simpler, thanks to the fact that (when it is off) you can’t see any buttons at all.
The LG Shine sports four buttons and a scroll wheel, but even still it is tastefully done and looks nice and simple.
This phone is still gorgeous, but it’s a different kind of gorgeous. The LG Shine is the kind of phone you’d almost expect James Bond to carry around. It’s covered with brushed metal and metallic greys, sensible bevels and sharply defined lines. It feels heavy. It’s a man’s phone at heart, but one that a woman could get away with.
It’s actually the most masculine-looking phone I’ve ever seen, and I’m not sure that LG have recognised this and embraced it in their advertising campaigns.
The contrast couldn’t be clearer with the LG Chocolate, which is so feminine it hurts. Girls love ‘em, and far prefer them to this (I’ve not even been asking this, they’ve told me!).
So if LG play their cards right, the LG Shine might be come as ubiquitous with the men in the UK as the LG Chocolate is with the ladies at the moment.
There is one little flaw in the masculinity of the Shine, however. Simply enough, when it’s off, the display reverts into a total (although slightly dull) mirror. It is the most functional pocket mirror I’ve ever seen in my life.

Style
- Good: Lots of nice brushed metal, very solid feel, on the heavy side, slide-concept design, extremely masculine, cool gadget feel.
- Bad: Too masculine? Too heavy? Too grey? Some unbelievably uncool ringtones.

The signal issues r the true!!! and its all down to the back casing being metal!!! i mean take a look at the nokia 8800!!! all metal yet the antenna cover is plastic coz it inteferes wit signal strength!!!

Go to (1) Profiles > [whichever profile] > (2) Personalise > (5) Message tones, then pick the one you want.
Number four is atrocious.
Im thinking of getting this phone, but of what people have said about the signal strength and not being able to have the tones they want, i may think again..
The phone is really rubbish and the signal is really bad.
The mirror gets scrathed and doesn’t work well.

i havnt got it yet, but havin’ read plls comments, it sounds like it solely depends taste really. 1 person says signal is alrite and the other, says no - i suppose its checkin’ simple things such as thinkin’ well maybe its coz ur hands are too greasy for some of u!. many think the mirror is cool and a FEW dnt fink so. I think this is the best model out of the LG image wise, so far really. Like i said i havnt got it yet but it generally seems ok to me really and i think it also takes a bit of gettin’ used too like the other phones…but come on, it cnt b that bad!!!

Been trying to send SWF via bluetooth to the phone frm my Macbook Pro but the phone accepts it and store under OTHER instead if image. So I can’t view or set it as wallpaper.

i’m getting an LG shine on friday to replace my sidekick 2. The sidekick was good but as you may of heard they recently all mailfunctioned in britain and are ot sold here anymore! also i didnt save my conatcts to my sim so i have to do it manually now lol (i have 116 contacts!!!) but im still excited bout my new phone, and from the review (which is pretty good lol) it sounds good. hope its as good as it sounds and looks….
I got my new LG Shine today, I did have to take the first one back after having it for 4days I realised it was constantly red hot, it wouldn’t recognise the memory card id put in, it kept freezing and took about 2 minutes to write a text because of this and also the battery only lasted an hour even after charging it for 10 hours. So I took it back and got my new one today, because I still like the phone! My new ones been working fine, it’s not hot which is a good sign. A few people have mentioned poor signal but I haven’t had that problem at all. The phone does collect alot of finger prints but comes with a cute ’screen buffer’ that attached (like a phone charm would) which looks a bit dorky but I found very useful. Also there arnt many ringtones on, and I could only for about 12 songs on so I recommend buying an external memory card for the mp3 player. I could set a picture id uploaded onto the phone (or taken with the camera) as wallpaper but I could not set it to display big, it only displays as a small picture in the center which is annoying. This is my first LG phone and I’ve found it quiet user friendly, the cam takes a good picture, the sound is ok, not as good as my previous Sony Erricson W800i but when you listen thru headphones the sound is perfect!!

I haven’t got this phone yet and I doubt I will as I don’t have much money. Jordan and I live in a tent and we catch buses. We can’t afford a mirror and this is the reason why we would like to get this phone. We hear it’s very spunkalicious. Will we get good reception if we are traveling on the bus? Also when we live under our bridge. This will be the only decent thing we will own so it better be good. Except our bus passes. Can you put mp3 for your message tone?

ive been using this fone frm past 15 days and had no problems untill now..can some1 teme how do i increase the volume of the voice..wen i slide open it i can hardly hear the persons voice. my volume is set to 5 and that is the maximum volume it can reach.is there any other way to incrase it…

over all im happy with mt lg shine but i get bored quite quick so now want the sony eri w880i, but thing that most annoys me is you can only use the setting message tones on this phone. Can change ring tones no problem but no setting to change message tones!

I bought mine over nine days ago. It’s a good phone. But I’m rather disappointed. For the price I’ve paid for it, I expected more.

It’s Camera isn’t all that good. That was kinda expected anyways, but when you take a snap, after the auto-focus goes green and the sreen freezes, the Photo seems to “lag” and move a bit, which ocasionally leads to blurrying or mis-aiming. It’s not a BIIIIIIIG deal, but it’s a deal anyway. A boring one. Moving on…
I can’t change the tones for the clock alarm. Nor for the incoming messages. In fact, I can only select my ringtone, and that’s all. I mean, how much harder would it be for them to include that, for God’s sake?
The MP3 Player won’t allow me to separate the songs in Folders. You go into the MP3 Player screen, it opens up ALL of the MP3 in the cellphone, Phone’s memory or External. So, the pre-made ringtones GETS FRIKKIN’ STUCK within my playlist. That’s SOOOO annoying. I’m listening to my songs and then suddenly some random woman shouts “LIFE IS GOOOD! PARARARA PA PAI RI RA PA!” in my ear. And it also makes impossible to separate your songs in Albums, since it also reorganizes everything through alphabetical order.
This model has no cover as of yet, only some “protection blades” - little plastic covers that gets put over the cellphone and will slightly stick to it” - that just suck. Mine’s got a scratch over it’s back, but that was due to my own negligency in not using the Blades. But I can see it happening again in the future, for since the back blade WON’T ATTACH TO THE PHONE, I will probably lose it sooner or later. Oh jeez. lso, the blades catches lots of fingerprints and that which I call “air dirt” - little particles as little furs and stuff that goes through the air -, even under the blade.
The PC Sync software will ONLY allow me to manage my Contacs, and NOTHING-ELSE. I at least hoped for a means to backup the incoming and sent messages to the PC or something. I even hoped fpor a MP3 Player Folder Menagement, but I found nothing.
So, overall, it IS a good phone. It just didn’t meet my expectations with stuff that realy annoyed me. Oh jeez. Gotta live with it now. =/

Ive had mine for about two months now and its the best phone ive ever had. the people that say they cant change their message tones or alarm tones are stupid…did you even read the book? figure it out, its not that hard. The reception is fine and the mirror comes in handy.
Go into my sounds select the mp3 song you want, go to options scroll down to sound theme’s and set the damn song as a message tone.
and for the people who spell like morons…go back to fucking school.

I always thought that reception was based on what phone company you were with. But according to this it’s not. Well I’m getting mine for my birthday tomorrow and I’m not too worried about all these things everyones complaining about. Try having a Motorola V3 RAZR then you’ll have something to complain bout it has 10 times less memory than this phone. So anything to me will be an upgrade!

I’m using a 2GB MicroSD-card and it works fine.

Well i got this phone for my son it came yesterday and whilst it looks amazing its not for one the software wont work on vista you would think that being as vista has been out a while now they could at least make the software compatible with it and also for the mac ?
The scoll bar is annoying putting it mildly its way to sesitive and no matter how carefull you are you always seem to hit the wrong tab with it , the volume is appaling this is the quietest phone ever considering i got this because of the mp3 intergrated it sucks as a mp3 player and its wrong imo to even mention this to people when selling it to them as it just isnt worth mentioning , then of course you cant hear your calls every call this phone has had have been missed no we are ot deaf its just that quiet and the same with the alarm so my son overslept to top it off , the only saving grace is that it looks classy and stylish but for how long ? i wouldnt recomend buying this phone to anyone its just to quiet and impractical

Hello I have to decide wether I keep the phone or not .
These are the things that I don’t like (if someone has a solution please feel free to share it) :
battery lasts only 46 hours
message tone can only be selected from 5 stupid tones
WHAT I REALLY HATE : when I use the T9 text input and for a certain key combination already exist eg 2 words I do not get the spell key on the left . Instead I have to go to options , ad T9 word and then type th word . Problem is the phone doesn’t always erase the original word showing before I entered the options menu .
I really like the build quality and the looks but I now realize how easy to use and how many “free to chose”settings my sonyericsson K750i had .
If they just upgraded the firmware to fix these things I would be a happy user
everyone has their own choice wether its a guy or a girl so it dont matter who buys the phone.
please stop arguing who should have the phone or not, youre money spend it as you like.
as for the phone i think it looks quite good but then again looks can be deceiving.
ive ordered mine today will check it out if I dont like it will give it back.

**Well, it’s so nice, I don’t wanna get the mirror damaged, so I bought a clear case, but with the case on, it look a lot bulkier, loses some appeal.
**I am ticked right off I cannot change my message tones.
**To upload videos, it’s a friggin pain in the butt, it doesn’t take normal mp4 or mpg,oh no, it takes 3gp. To make matters worse, the conversion software doesn’t even come with the phone, so you will have to purchase the software elsewhere. I want my coldplay videos on my phone!
other than that, I wouldn’t swap this phone for any other in the World. ven with all the new phones out now, nothing compares to the LG Shine. Lovin it.

Nice review btw A bit repetative here and there but gets the point across. And seriously if phone scratching and sound are a problem get some bluetooth earphones get a nice soft leather case ( even if they’re not made exclusively for The Shine many similarly shaped phones sell cases separately and will work fine.
Get a decent SD card and you got an mp3 player too, what more could you want in such an awesome looking phone? (Y) wtg LG

i havent bought the phone yet but i’m really looking forward to getting it, i’ve actually been researching this phone a lot and i just want to know the features for the camera which i cant seem to find any where. can it frame or interact with the pictures it takes AFTER you take them? and i’m guessing it cant be used as a modem bec i havent heard anything about that either. i think that this phone might of relied to much on the fact that it has a really cool look and they did not put to much into the ability of the phone.

The LG CU720 (also called the Shine) has no way to record a conversation! Why would this not be allowed with the phone? Obviously it can do it.
If you know how to record a conversation, please let me know. I often recorded calls with my Sony Ericsson Z520a. It was very useful when calling a service provider to discuss a bill or to drop services with the phone company - that appear again and again.

I love the phone, had no problems using it. But for some reason i cant get the damn software to work! I have loaded and removed the software so many times, but still no joy

If you have a chance to get this phone - DONT! I have this on contract and it is the worst! If I let the battery go dead so the phone switches off, it doesnt come back on again (the amount of times I have had to go into the phone shop to get this sorted) and now I am having problems with giving and receiving calls! I cant, cannot hear anything - no ringing tone and nobody at the other end of the line (even though they can hear me fine) Bain of my life and I will be getting rid of it as soon as possible!!!!!

I got my Lg Shine for christmas, and its been working perfectly fine up until 10 minutes ago.
I was playing music on the Music player, and from the other room I hear my music stop playing. i went back to my room and the phones completly dead, (which doesn’t make sence cause it was charging all night.)
IT WONT EVEN TURN ON NOW. i have it pluggged into my charger iv tryed removing the battery and putting it back in. My phone is in perfect condition and should not be doing this.
has this happend to anyone else? please let me know. cause i can’t even turn it on. no lights light up either.

Okey…i got mine almost a month and had no problems…you have enough signal, it doesnt trun off, the battery life is pretty good almost 4 days with sms and mp3s…the phone is pretty cool…you wont be disapointed!! LG SHINE ROCKS
I’m getting this phone for my birthday in 1 month. And I was wondering how much does this cost usually and also if you can choose your own ringtones that you want instead of the ones provided. Like for my current phone I can record things and use them as a ringtone. Is it possible to do it with this phone ?

I have just recieved this phone 2 day, and i think it is great.
I have just read most of the reviews and what a load of rubbish i have read abot this incredable phone. Either they havent got this phone, or they have told lots of lies cause i carnt find anythin wrong with it.
People just write any crap I am just so happy i have got this phone, and if any one else is thinking of buying 1 u wont be dissapointed. Dont listen 2 time wasters, they not worth it.
just buy the phone, and c for yourself.

I’ve got the phone 4 days ago.
but I can hear the alarm, thats important 
It is a nice phone, loking good, has nice functionalities.
Overall is a good phone.
But I’ve got problems with it already :(.
Sometimes, when I close the slide it turns off.
Seems I’m not the onlyone getting the problem.
I’ll go to the store to be fixed.
Other bad point for the phone:
- you can’t change the incoming messages tones and the alarm clock tones with your own ones;
- you can’t see movies full screen(the player menu is on half of the screen) - there shoulded be an option for this as it is for the pictures;
- you can’t put new ‘.swf’ files on the phone for using as a wallpaper;
- you can’t call/answer with the slide closed(actually you can call the speed dial numbers)
- the phone is very quiet
Befor this I’ve had an Nokia with a very loud alarm that was telling what time is it(this could be a good thing for all the phones)

Ive attached the cable into my phone and pc. The computer has recognised it but I dont know where to find it usually is in the e: removable disc drive but that doesnt seem to be shaowing can someone help please?

you nowz i got diz phone 2 but it really grate but da memmory is really poor u now how 2 get external memmory lol
this phone is simply rubbish its quiet, the soft were dosent synk with the computer in the sun you cant see the screen, the signal is bad (alotho the same sim in my samsung d600 is ok in the same area) the scroal bar is realy annoying and the little buttons on each side, it keeps deleting my phone book messages and photos musci and videos, its un relible as it keeps freesing, the camra is in the place where my thinger when holing phone sits on the lense wich results in bad pictures, my head phones broke 2 weeks after buying the phone , the battery lasts about 17 hours, you cant choose a message tone i mean nobody wants there high piched text tones to go off in the middle of a shop
if ur wureed about signal problems then u can check on the t mobile website sumwere if the signal will be good in your area b4 u buy it. mi signal was good and it works fine most of da time.
i need 2 know… how do u transfer pics from the lg shine tou your pc… i tried using the usb but all it gives me is a music and games & applications menu. i cannot find the picture menu to transfer the pics to my pc… can someone please explain it 2 me
I have the same problem with the music playing and shutting off- I have to take my battery out and then turn it on again- That sucks big time- I will get another phone and if it happens again I will choose another phone - too bad because I do like it- Yes the rings are pretty low- But I do like the phone, mine doesnt have a wheel though..

cant stand my lg shine. scrachtes easy reception is rubbish.If you want a good phone go for a nokia or sony ericsson there alot better e.g. memory and camera. the scroll button is great in the middle but lg let the phone down by not looking at wat other phones for the same price have like camera mega pixels and memory size
the music player is rubbish aswell its skips when playing a song with a fast tempo so if you like music dont get this phone
