Mac Tip: Window Dongle

The [tag]icons[/tag] and their respective titles which can normally be found along the top row of most [tag]Mac[/tag] [tag]OS X[/tag] [tag]applications[/tag] can usually be bended to your will in two ways.

Firstly, they are usually customisable. Just right-click (or control-click) on their background and select ‘Customise Toolbar…’ (or whatever) to get going. I’ve found that there is a lot of hidden [tag]functionality[/tag] for a few [tag]apps[/tag] here. (For me, namely [tag]Transmit[/tag] and [tag]Transmission[/tag], the [tag]FTP[/tag] program hiding things like ‘New Folder’ and ‘Get Info’ while the [tag]BitTorrent[/tag] Client hides things like ‘Pause selected’ and ‘Resume selected’.)

Secondly, and this is certainly a hidden feature within [tag]Mac[/tag] [tag]OS X[/tag], when you Command-click on the top-right-hand button which appears in windows, you can set the toolbar’s icons and text to different sizes and combinations. So you can have no text, all text, small icons, large icons, etc. This has turned out to be quite handy in the latest (lovely) release of [tag]Skype[/tag], which allows me to just leave the search field along the top window with no descriptive text.

So there you have it.
