This game is so fantastically overwhelming I’m just going to write whatever seems to stand out about it.
I couldn’t wait any longer; waiting ages for it to come out in the UK was too much so I imported a (very good working) copy from Japan… and I’m very glad I did!
I love Super Mario. They’re the best games ever made, and each major new Mario title simply builds upon an already solid series.
I bought my Nintendo DS the other week because I knew this game was coming out. Before I received New Super Mario Bros., I had Mario Kart DS which came with the DS, and Super Mario 64 for the DS which I nabbed off of eBay. Both pretty solid games which make good used of the DS’ features. But nothing compared to the New Super Mario Bros.
The old and the New
Super Mario World for the Super Nintendo was the best game ever made. Indisputable fact. Along with that, there are loads of other really cool Mario games out there which I played throughout my childhood (up until recent years).
So what’s really nice about the New Super Mario Bros. game is to see them incorporate a lot of the various elements of the old games (which stayed reasonably separate in style) into this new one. It’s really nice to see things from Super Mario All Stars and Super Mario 64, etc.
But on top of that, there are a few new moves and power-ups that have made it. There’s a giant mushroom, for instance, which will let you break through everything but the ground as you walk through the level, and reward you with 1-UPs when you cause enough damage.
The graphics are very cool and completely hit the nail on the head. Even though it’s a 2-D game, most things are 3D, which allows for better, smoother animation and the odd bit of zooming in and out. Mario is very well animated and a pleasure to play.
The new sounds are wicked; I love the new tune and want it on my mobile. But on top of new sounds, New Super Mario Bros also uses a lot of older sounds. This is only a good thing; it’s really great to hear some of them again! Even when you pause the game…
Done! Well… sort of
This edition is also teaming with hidden things, which I’ve yet to even approach. Two entire worlds are waiting for me, and I’ve already ‘completed’ the game, so to speak.
There’s plenty of extra-value in this game, not least because each course has three gold coins somewhere, and to get to some of the cool stuff you need those coins.
There are also parts of the map I’ve yet to even touch because I can’t even see how to get at them… yet. That’s what was one of the things that made Super Mario World so cool at times.
So… 98% I’d say at the moment, and that’s likely to increase as I find the other bits of the game.
It’s a truly inspiring piece of work.
Take a look at the official site for media and clips and ting.
Agreed…this game is great. I’m really glad they threw in some of the mini games from Super Mario 64 DS, since I got rid of it. Gave me even more reason to pick this up.
Excellent. I’m going to Europe for a few weeks in the summer and I’m tempted to take something like this with me.
I’m definitely taking my DS with me to France - what’s especially cool about NSMBros. is that the other person doesn’t even need the game to play with you.
I’ll be getting this as soon as it comes out on the 30th, along with a very lovely-looking DS Lite. Until then I’ve got Mario Kart and Metroid to tide me over.
I lost my copy of this game in France! BUGGER!!!!
