LG ‘Chocolate’ Phone KG800 - Detailed Review

With keypad out - the LG KG800 Chocolate phoneUpdate: Check out the review of the new LG Shine

No phones are perfect. Ever. It’s because these days mobile phones are very complex devices - they do all sorts of stuff, and so it’s hard to ensure universal quality. With the Chocolate phone, LG has had a good go at doing their very best to minimise any errors. Links will take you to pictures which illustrate the point (see all).

Firstly, the name. Chocolate phone. ‘I have a chocolate phone.’ It’s a marketing technique, and it’s already worked well. Think Wii, Google, etc.

Style - excellent

The Chocolate phone is a thing of beauty. It really is a stunning device; and the girls just love it.

Sleek, smooth and simply cool, the chocolate phone really is one to show off (and I have been, a lot). I love its looks, and I’m one who is very picky about these sorts of things.

One of the best things about the ’style’ of the phone is its simplistic look when it’s not being used (that is, its in ’sleep’, waiting for a call or text). The sliding nature of the phone is really cool, too. It can stand on it’s side. Compared to an iPod shuffle.

Hardware - very good

The hardware manages to do everything very well. Calls are clear and loud, the screen is nice and bright and can be used even in bright sunlight, and the camera produces pretty cool results.

The heat-sensitive touchpad is very nice; I love to point that little feature out as you can see it in action right away, but it could be a downside if you have ‘fat fingers’… a light touch is needed (and perhaps patience at the start). It doesn’t stand on the table upright, but it does sideways (and leaning).

The slidiness of the phone is brilliantly done, and the keypad is even back-lit to perfection. One issue in the usability of the phone is simply the placement of the side-buttons. There are two on each side, all the same height along the phone. I do feel that they’re in an awkward position and you can’t use them when you hold the phone like a normal person.

While it’s hard to place them in a good place, at least them being on the display part of the phone would mean I could use them when the phone had the keypad out and I’m making a call. The ‘end call’ button is on the side, so really I must be able to press that with ease if I want to continue looking slender and elegant :D

Also there’s a flap on the side of the phone. It covers the power/data connection and it’s poorly made - it flops about if you don’t handle the phone correctly and can ruin the look of the thing. This is a bit ironic, as it’s made from the same silky material as the case and is meant to make the phone look better.

The earphones/handsfree kit it comes with is a bit of a joke - those earphones are megga gross and most of the buttons on the extra control don’t do anything.

It comes with bluetooth and can go on the ‘net, and can play MP3s very loud indeed which is cool for cooking and showing people new music. Its got a really good amount of memory, too (128MB), which is good for lots of 3G video footage and music.

Media samples

We’re doing our A-levels, so this is how we spend our physics lessons. Video isn’t this size, but is this quality.

Picture sample - it’s a very high-res camera for it’s size.

Software - good

But not excellent, especially for someone who likes his computer. Products like this make me think I could have a great future in ensuring software is excellent before going out the door, because very quickly into using the phone a few holes appeared.

Video playback is excellent (and it can handle a 3.5 minute music video with ease) MP3s can be played, along with WMAs and AACs, so that’s a real bonus to many. The sounds this thing makes are lovely - very nice and a pleasure to listen to. I especially love that each key has its own note, and my Mum’s number makes a cool tune. So texting is interesting, too. It also comes with a Sudoku java game.

As a guy who needs to be woken up a lot, the alarms feature is brilliant - multiple alarms, multiple days for each, a variety of decent rings.

The general quality of the software is high - the look and feel of the menus is nice, and everything is solid (it hasn’t crashed or faulted, yet).

Bluetooth works very nicely with my iMac - transferring files is a doddle and it also plays 3G video files generated by QuickTime Pro.

The phone works and does many things pretty well… but people who like their computers may find themselves frustrated.

  1. A calendar and address book which won’t sync with my iMac’s better, easier to edit brother.
They include special software for Windows which will let you manage and back-up this stuff, but that’s no good; time was wasted making that and not supporting existing (well documented) standards which would be appreciated more. The phone is, after all, bluetooth enabled. (I’d be looking for someone to fire.)
  2. Text input can be frustrate.
Unfortunately my main use for this phone will be texting, so it’s a shame that the predictive text software (T9 make this) is stupid (as in it doesn’t learn which word you use the most), and makes it impossible to edit a word you’ve already made (move on and you have to go back and do it again). Also when switching case inputs, ‘ABC’ should be followed by ‘abc’, not the other way around (this can ruin the ease of input). All these small little things are silly errors and, while they don’t make the phone rubbish by any means, they should have been dealt with.
  3. The icons are poorly thought out, and the good ones are copies of OS X or Windows.
Vetting the designers work (or, properly briefing them) would have fixed this.
  4. There is no loudspeaker option for calls.
I was actually stunned by this, as the speaker is loud… but the phone just doesn’t let you. Why, exactly, I would love to know.
  5. Some menus are non-intuitive.
Again, simply poor usability. Nothing you can’t learn after playing with it, though.
  6. Other little niggles: silly animations are displayed when you play an MP3; you can not change the ring tone tune or volume you can change ringtones, my bad!; I should be able to set what happens when I press the camera button twice (default is play MP3s); the screen should show what the final image will look like when I take a picture, not a cropped version of it (debatable, though); can’t zoom in to look closer at photos.

I find is quite sad that I have to write this list, because so many of the problems seem to come from people not thinking. But it’s not just LG doing this - all bloody phones are flawed… they’re just too complex not to be.

For what it’s worth, though, while I complain so much about all this stuff I still love the phone… it just works, and that’s as good as any.

Conclusions

This is a very good phone indeed. It does all the things you need it to. I know that I will be using it for the next year at the very least. It’s a strong player and feels like it will last.

While it doesn’t pander to my geeky tastes of perfect, usable software, it is more than good enough for me (as I haven’t made it myself). I will say that if LG ever want to stop these sort of mistakes happening again, hire me… because I will make it perfect.

The LG Chocolate phone has its real super-strength in the style department, without a doubt. It’s a stunner. But on top of being a stunner, it has the body of a premiership football player (nothing Olympic), and the brains of reliable-but-dim secretary.

So… I’d do it, then. Review, pictures and images, and more information about the new white and pink versions of this phone.

You can’t change the ring tone? Isn’t that going to be a major no-no considering most people in the UK like changing their ring tones as well as having different ring tones for different people (e.g. the theme from The Omen or The Exorcist for when your parents ring).

That single lack-of-feature could be the one thing that stops a great many people buying this phone …

Fintan 13th May 2006

I agree - I have tried to change it a few times, but setting a new tone doesn’t actually mean anything… it just sticks with the old one. A fundamental error, really.

Duncan 13th May 2006

Whats the retail value of these phones in the UK, and I know they come in white in Asia, is there any word\sightings of them in white there?

Fintan 13th May 2006

Nothing in white…

I would say around £300 - £350 on it’s own… probably a lot less when you buy it with a year’s network contract.

Ben O'Neill 13th May 2006

You can get the phone for free on certain networks / tariffs. According to the LG website it has 64 ringtones and supports polyphonic / mp3 tones, so I’m guessing it can do them :)

Fintan 13th May 2006

Personally I do hope it’s just mine, and they haven’t messed up all of them :D

private 13th May 2006

“heat sensitive” is wrong - that’s a capacitive sensor in the keypad.

Nick 13th May 2006

Yet again LG have copied something, lets think back. We’ve had a N90 copy, RAZR copy and now a Samsung D600 copy. When will they ever come up with thier own designs.

Anyway it does look nice.

Fintan 13th May 2006

@private - But the touch pad is heat sensitive - normal objects will not set it off.

jbelkin 13th May 2006

Nice but too large and non folding to make much of an effect on the RZR market - how hard is it to design a folding phone?

Fintan 13th May 2006

I wouldn’t want a folding phone - they just about always look rubbish. The very word ‘clamshell’ is unpleasant.

henryaj 13th May 2006

The keypad most likely *is* capacitance touch. Normal objects don’t set them off either as only your finger alters the capacitance field in the correct way. Try breathing on they keypad — if it was heat-sensitive, the keys would go haywire.

Saucy 13th May 2006

Arg. C’mon UK. Get with the grammar Nazi-ism:

It’s = It is.
Its = possessive.

Cool phone, though.

kevin 14th May 2006

i cant stop myself from telling the word that i won 2 of these phones on the radio last weak get in !!!!!

chris 14th May 2006

you can change the ringtone its simple. Go onto My stuff, then sound, go onto ringtone desired the press options and the set as ringtone should be available.

Fintan 14th May 2006

I have tried that and it doesn’t work. So this must be an issue with my phone only.

hacker not cracker 16th May 2006

I love these thin phones like the Chocolate, Razr, and Blade. They are too cute!

[...] If you’ve read any of the media or blog reviews of the Chocolate Phone that we’ve featured here, you’ll know by now that one of the key features is it’s glowing red touch pad. [...]

Fintan 18th May 2006

@ julie: Yes, I have it on PAYG with Orange. All you need to do is buy the phone, and then take your PAYG sim and put it into the phone. It works a treat.

@ JJ: You can record video - a lot of it and at a reasonably high quality. The video clip in this review is a sample of the video you can record with it.

julie 19th May 2006

whats the price for phone as a pay as you go at orange

Fintan 19th May 2006

Orange aren’t selling it. It’s free with a 12-month contract on O2 at the Carphone Warehouse.

Tariq 20th May 2006

I read this review before I got it, but regardless of the lousy software, I got one anyway (the looks were just too good). I was pleasantly surprised, as the ringtone could be changed. Personally, I think the predictive text is also not that bad, and the photo quality is excellent compared to my old phone (D500). Overall I think it’s great!

The phone is also free on o2 online shop with a 12 month contract (think you can get one for £25/month with quite a few texts and mins).

joe 20th May 2006

did i hear right, the phone hasnt got a loud speaker?

Martin 21st May 2006

Okay.. Someone said it’s a copy of the Samsung D600. My gosh.. How can anyone say that? Both phones are sliders. That it. Nothin’ more to it. Besides, the Samsung’s ugly as hell compared to this one.

One can only hope that the software isn’t as crappy as some people claim. And if it is, I hope LG will provide firmware upgrades. I’m going to get me one of these..

Ush 23rd May 2006

Have heard that files cannot be shared with other handsets through the bluetooth. Is this the case do you know?

Would like to try one of these handsets but I tend to share videos and pics with friends and family so this is an important consideration for me.

Fintan 23rd May 2006

You can transfer video, image and audio files quite easily through Bluetooth with this handset to many others.

Bex 29th May 2006

Is it not possible to switch off the predictive text on this phone? I love all the other features, but T9 is the one thing that puts me off getting it…

Would appreciate anyone’s help!

Fintan 29th May 2006

@ Bex: Yes you can switch off predictive text very easily.

@ mia: Yes, there are only two GUI themes for the LG chocolate phone, the silver one looking a bit dodge in my opinion. The default black one is more than nice, though.

@ mark: You can can not change the text alert sound to something you have moved onto the phone.

@ joe: I can’t do that either - I think you need to take a picture at the lowest resolution for that to work.

@ Natalie: I’m sure you can find somewhere to buy it from. Then just stick a PAYG sim card into it, and away you go!

@ dee: You can’t change the volume of the SMS alert (on my model).

vernon 30th May 2006

after reading the whole of the forum, well i love this phone all the bad points are smothered by good points so its the phone im going to get,

the looks are stunning and its as smooth as tom cruise.

now imagine this phone in a film

how slick would it look but i guess u have to have nokia in the front cover..

arrr well great phone THANKS EVERYONE

AR 30th May 2006

Help! I got the phone yesterday - it’s the first time I moved away from Nokia and I’m starting to regret.

I love the look and the feel, but the text imput drives me mad and spoils the whole experience! The predictive text doesn’t switch to a capital leter, after putting a full stop and a space… And having to keep changing to a capital by toggling the bottom right key is made worse by the fact that: a) the capital letter is not right next to the small letter and b) the number of clicks you need to go through to get to a T9Abc is not set and keeps changing! Is something just simply wrong with my handset or have LG managed to make such a fundamental mistake?… Please can you tell me how this works on your phone. Tnx.

Fintan 30th May 2006

@ AR: Yes, LG have made a fundamental flaw.

Unfortunately, I would put this down to them not understanding the English language well enough.

On the brighter side, however, you do sort of get used to it.

AR 30th May 2006

Damn… I was still hoping that there was a glitch with the software on my phone… What a shame. I think I will just stop using captial letters. Tnx. A

to save picture to contact you must take the picture with the smallest picture option on the camera

Jorge 1st June 2006

You mentioned it works fine with your iMac via Bluetooth.
- Have you tried to transfer wallpapers to the phone (if so, did they work?)
- The MP3 are transfered thru iTunes or Bluetooth File Exchange?
- Is it a “Mac friendly” phone? (I have a SonyEricsson and it is very Mac friendly, thus my question)

Thanks for your great review!

A great review and some really valid pros and cons for the LG Chocolate, aka KG800.
This phone is flying at the moment obviously helped along by LG’s massive TV and Magazine advertising campaign.
But lets not all forget that this phone is ALL about its looks and not about features. It doesn’t offer anything new in the way of technology but it does offer todays phone features in a casing that looks fantastic.
We are looking forward to the white vesion being launched, no word yet on a release date in the UK but it is already in production overseas - can’t say I like the White Chocolate version as much as the brown but hey - I’m sure it’ll whet someones appetite!

I’ve got a Razr and am trying to decide between a new razr in a different finish, or this. I”ve pretty much decised on the LG, but the one thing holding me back is, what about scratches? The whole outer seems to be made out of the same stuff as my (very scratched) ipod screen. How does it handle life in a pocket full of change and keys?

I’m hopefully getting one of these phones at the weekend. The shop is only getting 4 in and they have reserved one for me. Can’t wait to get it as my last phone was a Siemens SL65 and it just died on me so back to an old phone for the timebeing.

I hope my new LG can do all these things without any hassle, ie. change the tones etc!

Fay 2nd June 2006

I got mine today and I love it! So excited, It’s easy to use and does all I need it to do! only down side is I cant stick it on handsfree when busy cooking n stuff and tex volume is quiet but apart from that it’s FAB!!

joe 3rd June 2006

the quiet msg tone is well annoyin!!!!!!!!!

can’t change the volume and, contradicting fintan, u can’t change the msg tone to one u hav put on yourself!!!!!!!!!

AJ 3rd June 2006

Message alert and volume alters fine on mine.
Ring tones change easily.
Syncs OK with MacOSX Tiger
Got mine free on O2, with cashback bonus and 500 minutes per month (including international calls) and 100 texts for £35 / month. Free insurance for 6 months. (Then cancellable). 12 m contract. I think this is an excellent little phone.

hell10n 3rd June 2006

Re: This getting a contract phone free on O2.

Nothing is for free. What Fintan is saying is that the phone will cost u nothing if u pay a line rental fee of £20 per month for 12 months. Its basically like buying the phone really but u pay a bit off per month with your line rental so its kinda like Hire Purchase.
Thats all very well if you’re on O2 already because you’ll have the free calls aswell, but getting it on an O2 contract for 12 months at £20, then switching the Sim Card to an Orange PAYG Sim Card isnt going to work.
I had a contract phone on Orange but I still had my old Orange PAYG Sim Card. I tried switching the cards but I got no signal because my phone was contract based, not PAYG.
So I fail to see how an O2 contract phone could be used with an Orange PAYG Sim Card, as they are even more foreign to each other!
Fintan are u sure u have an O2 contract phone but are using an Orange PAYG Sim Card in it?

Fintan 3rd June 2006

@hell10n: No, I was given the phone by LG without a sim or contract, as if I bought it ’sim free’ on its own.

hell10n 3rd June 2006

Fintan May 18th, 2006 #

@ julie: Yes, I have it on PAYG with Orange. All you need to do is buy the phone, and then take your PAYG sim and put it into the phone. It works a treat.

&

Fintan May 19th, 2006 #

Orange aren’t selling it. It’s free with a 12-month contract on O2 at the Carphone Warehouse.

So how do u know that this phone will work as u mentioned above if u were given the phone by LG unlocked?
U are misleading people into thinking that the phone will automatically work on other networks which it wont unless u get it unlocked, which will cost more money again.

Fintan 3rd June 2006

hell10n: I’m not misleading anyone.

I was given this phone to review. I had another phone on PAYG with Orange. I inserted my SIM card and it works.

A phone that you buy outside of a contract will work with any major network in the UK, because they all follow the same communication specifications.

Of course if you get this phone on contract you will have to use the phone with the network provider. In that case, you aren’t buying the phone so much as the contract and service.

However, if you are able to buy an LG Chocolate phone, sim-free and unlocked as I received it, without any stings attached, it will work just fine on PAYG.

hell10n 3rd June 2006

But u didnt buy the phone. U got it unlocked.

Telling some1 to buy the phone, which will obviously be locked to a network, then put in a simcard from another network will not work unless u have that phone unlocked.
Even if u bought it on a PAYG & used another networks PAYG Simcard it will not work.
The only way it will work is if u buy a PAYG phone for the network u are currently on (with this phone thats quite a lot of money), or get it unlocked unlocked to use on your network which will cost even more money.

Just look at ebay..and someone will ship it…
if not, U can contact me on ICQ, we can surely figure out something.
ICQ:191826546

Fintan 3rd June 2006

I’m not telling anyone to buy anything.

The thing, hell10n, is that you must buy it on contract if you want it at the moment, and when you buy something on contract clearly you need to use that network.

I don’t even see your point, because it’s a non-issue.

So… DUH!!!

hell10n 3rd June 2006

o rite sorry about that!!

Pol 4th June 2006

does this phone connect via usb with pc?

starfire 4th June 2006

No, LG did not ‘copy’ other phones.

LG- Chocolate was out in the market of South Korea long before N90 and RAZR was released.

Fintan 4th June 2006

@ Pol: Yes it does connect to the PC by USB cable.

Louy 5th June 2006

Great Reveiw Hunny!!! LOL

So good infact that I’ve just ordered the most expensive chocolate bar ever. LOL.

I got it at o2 for 19.99 a month for 12 months and it has 50mins and 200 texts, which I thought was alrite for a fone that wasn’t out on P&G yet.

So my brand-spanky new phone arrives tomorrow (my Birthday!) and I cant wait. Am so excited about it that I even paid the extra tenner to get it here before 10am, now thats desperation for you!

Thanks for making my mind up for me hun, and how did you get involved in reveiwing phones? You lucky thang you.

loving this phone so far, apart from…

contacts pictures - have to be taken with the phone at 72×72 resolution. You cannot import your own photos to use for contacts.

message alert tones - only 4 to choose from, quiet and you CANNOT use mp3s or import your own for use with yexy message alerts.

PAYG? I was on a vodafone contract and my wife on vodfone PAYG, we both switched to O2 contract…we both just swapped the O2 sim out and put our Vodafone sims into the chocolate and were up and running with the vodafone ones, no problems.

yexy message alerts??…. oops!

text message alerts!

smujee 6th June 2006

hi there, I simply must have this phone! Any ideas where I can get it on 3 network as thats what I’m on at the moment, can’t see it on there website. Thanks x

raj 6th June 2006

this phone is available on pay as you go from orange and vodafone from the carphone warehouse for £230

raj 6th June 2006

The volume of the message alert tone is linked to the ringtone volume so please increase this to also increase the message alert volume. To do this please do the following:

Menu -> Profiles -> select the profile currently in use -> Personalise -> ring volume

If you are having difficulties in hearing the message alert then you can change the message alert type to Ring & Vibrate or Ring Periodically (plays the message alert tone every 5 minutes). This option is available via the instructions above.

I just got this phone.. while the phone is pretty.. I’m not quite sure I like it for the practical features.. I don’t care about heaps of fancy software but I definitely miss the loudspeaker and decent predictive text on my v3 razr. This kinda really annoys me. Another thing.. the number keys don’t light up at all? Don’t most phones light up the number keys?? If I’m out somewhere in the dark like a club or concert I can’t see the keys to make calls if it’s not in my phonebook. Can someone correct me if the numbers keys light up at all? These are just really simple practical requirements in a phone (to me anyways)

Fintan 6th June 2006

The number keys do light up rather nicely, actually.

I have just got this phone, and I was looking forward to putting music on it and being able to download photos from it to my computer.

For some reason my computer (windows XP, apparently it should work fine) keeps bringing up a message saying that the USB device has malfunctioned and windows cannot recognise it.

The phone doesnt put up the background USB screen thing that I have been told it should.

Has anyone else had this problem?

I’ve now got my phone and its lovely. One snag though is I keep phoning people by accident as when looking in text messages, by accident sometimes I hover my finger over the button on the left and it starts phoning the person I have text. Agggrh.

Also I cant put more than one number to a persons name which is a shame.

Otherwise this phone is sex on legs!

[...] Dech reviewed the Chocolate phone and concluded that “this is a very good phone indeed. It does all the things you need it to. I know that I will be using it for the next year at the very least. It’s a strong player and feels like it will last. [...]

Hi can anyone tell me roughly how big the memory is for MP3’s?

I’m well annoyed with my Motorola and looking to upgrade soon to something with a decent capacity. This is the only phone I like look of but won’t bother if there’s no memory.

Ta guys.

just ordered my lg phone today..woooo

ur all talking about th loudspeaker n th ring tone volume and stuff…may sound ridicuolous, but it CAN go on silent cnt it? got vibrate?
cuz i never have mine on loud .
help
xx

Blondeii 11th June 2006

128MB internal - chk it out at the LG site it gives you all the details - have one and at first couldnt get the ring tone to change - its set at default and if you put people in a ‘group’ you have to change the ‘groups’ ringtone duh to us. Only thing we arent quite happy with is that you can only use the sms tones the phone already has - the software was a pain but if you plug the phone in via usb go to My Computer - grab it there (it shows as removable device) open the folders in there you can drag music/pics from comp to phone - we put the pics in the “other” folder as we tended to lose them when we put them in “pics” folder - Yes it has a silent profile - If anyone works out how to make the sms to one you put on yourself that would be great!!!!

Have just bought this phone today and i cant fnd any faults with it. For all you people who want it on PAYG because they cant have a contract you can get it on Flexi where you have a set bill then top up once u hit the limit theerfore you cant go over - my mum went along with that! Tis a really nice phone and the man at the shop said it was one of the best on the market ( i know your probably thinkin he was just trying to sell me it by sayin that but i asked him to get the best ones out!)

paul 12th June 2006

smujee 12th June 2006

i just got a samsung e900, my network provider told me it was a v.similar model to lg but without the little bug issues of the chocolate. i opened the box samsung looked nice thou not as sleek as the chocolate, i turned it on….. it made some typical samsung silly noises, the touch screen is way too sensitive and i called the 1st person in my phonebook twice by mistake. when i made a call the touch screen reacted against my face and beeping noises ruined my call! text messages were a mission………needless to say i had 14 days to send it back it went back after a day!

i am now awaiting credit to my upgrade and although i was unsure of the chocolate (as other sites had bad reviews) i have decided to try it anyway…..its the only decent looking phone. i text, call and take the odd few pics so i’m hoping the chocolate will be ok………………..

………if not i’ll be sending it back again, and reading reviews for other phones!

also is it true sudoku is the game on these?………my hubby loves that game my phone will get a flat battery every day!!!

Read down all the comments got my phne last week work with a mac but use bluetooth to transfer all photos and tunes so fine apart from same problem as one customer cant get photos to assign to a contact tried taking them directly with camera into photo file tried downloading into images file but keeps saying phonebook empty cant find answer anywhere.
help
Apart from that I keep accidently calling people with touch screen and when you arre on a call and want to end it why dosent end button work anymore.

juzzy 12th June 2006

Just sussed out adding pictures to contacts go to camera in settings reduce picture size to 72×72 take pictures when you go to add to a contact hey hey they are there beware heads do get chopped off though.
and the only way to end a call is the top right hand side button or close phone.
hope this helps some people.
