Ordered more memory for the iMac

Crucial Memory’s little email marketing campaign actually worked.

Buying

They sent me an email telling me about how if I order any kind of memory (RAM) which was 512MB or bigger before a certain date, I’d get a cool 256 Hi-Speed USB stick free, and free delivery. Now that is a pretty good deal, especially as I was going to buy the memory anyway. But I wasn’t going to buy it last night, when the email came, so I would think their spam actually worked on me, and I’m glad I got the good end of that deal. £37 for 512MB - brilliant.

But why would you want more memory?

I really don’t think the pre-installed 512MB that comes with the iMac is enough. While Macs handle memory very intelligently from what I have seen, there is the physical limit of space. Also, I’ve really felt it in the past few days when I’ve had Dreamweaver, Fireworks, iTunes and the three browsers open all at the same time - there is sometimes a delay and it isn’t pleasant.

Also there’s the dashboard, which uses up a large amount of memory for some reason. I do want to be able to use that more.

Then there are the other kind of delays which aren’t so cool. Loading dashboard, doing a spotlight search, entering Front Row… they’re all delayed and it doesn’t feel so good to have a lack in responsiveness. I get the feeling that when I use the remote to turn the volume up or down or pause the track, the system is loading some kind of program to do that… so there’s a delay and that’s something RAM could help out.

I hope it does the job!
