Pando is a great new application which allows you to move very large files to others at very high speeds for free. Brilliant.
It works using it’s own application, which does all the uploading and downloading. Much like a .torrent file, you send out .pando files by email. Download the tiny .pando file to get Pando to download the entire thing. And it’s cross-platform (OS X and Windows).
It’s really great stuff
Because their servers seem to suck the file up and belch it back out at top speeds, the experience is all the better - only through Pando I discovered I can upload at 40 KB/s! Downloading is similarly swift - again you can get it at maximum speed which is all the better for massive files.
Right now it’s in beta, but it doesn’t need to be. The only fault with the OS X version I could find is when you are entering who you want to send a file to. It’s a small one, and their working on it. But the application will be even more immense when it works.
You can pause uploads and downloads, too.
What could it do better?
- It would be nice to be able to drag files into the icon in the dock.
So, not much really. It gets the job done, as far as I can see. Beyond that, I the details of how the Pando system works are a slight mystery. I’m personally hoping that you can, like .torrent, distribute the .pando file and have multiple unknowns download the material… but this would raise security issues and would need a bit of management. I don’t know if it can already do that or not, so it’s not going on the list.
Get it
Pando seems to be in some funny beta which I don’t particularly understand. Do they want me to link to their special beta site or not? Well, they haven’t said anything about not promoting it, and they have their own blog which links to it, so why not?
Go to the special Pando beta site and download Pando. And why not send me something nice.
Aside
The word on the block is that Pando have had $4 million in investment - I’m wondering where it’ll be made back up, myself. Charging for such a service might be the answer… but how much?
