If I haven’t already told you, on Friday I took a day off of college to (essentially) buy an iMac over the phone.
It went very well, and I am told that it is heading for my home for tomorrow (Tuesday).
I can’t bloody wait.
But I feel uncomfortable with paying all of that money and not improving myself, though. The alternative was car, job, and party lifestyle, so this thing had better be good!
I have decided that I want to learn how to draw great stuff in Illustrator.
I think that’s a skill I’d really value myself, and I’m sure I’d love to have to confidence to be able to say ‘yes, I am able to draw that and make it look cool.’
I have very little conventional drawing ability. Clearly God decided that I would be blessed, disproportionately as you may soon see, with good looks instead. My stick men are rubbish and don’t even try to ask me to draw a face. I can just about get by in maths drawing graphs. I can, however, produce quite decent looking technical diagrams using Freehand for physics coursework. Oh yes.
There are some great examples of amazing illustration out there, and while I don’t think I’ll ever be able to meet that quality of drawing, I do hope I’ll be able to produce something reasonably nice.
Of course, I’ll be posting my work, discoveries, sites and all that on Dech as time goes by.
You may be surprised at what you can accomplish with digital media. I couldn’t paint anything in highschool art class and wasn’t allowed to use oil paints because of it. When i got hold of an old copy of Painter I found that I could pain recognizable scenes and figures in “oil paint”.
I was a GCSE/A-Level art student (god, I feel old right now), but I could never get around to actually painting/drawing in a computer program. Even when I did design work, I would end up scanning in a sketch and then tracing it, but I never found the mouse to be a good drawing tool. Getting to know the tools should be the first step (how-to draw a certain shape etc.) the next I think is getting a tablet (if you are serious) which is a superior tool to a mouse.
[...] In an earlier post I mentioned how I was going to use this new Mac as an incentive to learn how to draw, digitally. [...]
