I uninstalled Google Desktop 2…

…and don’t really miss it all that much.

The big problem I had with it is that it was taking up a ridiculous amount of space on my hard disk, something like 2 gigabytes, and that I was running out space.

Although it doesn’t tell you exactly how much space it is taking up, you get the feeling it isn’t just a little bit when you see that it has copied and stored away a new copy of your essay for every minute you were working on it.

I don’t know about you, but I just didn’t need that feature. At all. I couldn’t even turn it off, and each time I saw it I felt Google Desktop was being a little excessive.

I also had very little use for the sidebar, which was really only a gimmick to compete with Vista’s gimmick sidebar.

“every minute you were working on it” - that would annoy me too - and crash my computer.

Think I’ll keep GD2 for a while — I wanted to pull up a word doc the other day, so I just typed “flower” into the deskbar (which I prefer to the sidebar) and - boom - it was there. (was looking for my What Color Is Your Parachute flower diagram). Admittedly, I don’t use desktop search very often - maybe once a week?

PS I like your blog Fintan and how you try out all sorts of new software and services. Subscribed!
