Google adds AdSense, Firefox referrals

Google has added something new for all it’s AdSense users: referal buttons.

Their new referrals scheme will

  • pay $100 to you every time you refer a new user to AdSense who then goes on to earn $100
  • pay $1 for each new download of Firefox with the Google Toolbar installed.

Finally Google has put a price on having their toolbar software installed on users’ machines.

The new payout system for AdSense referrals is a little unusual, but it’ll no doubt encourage more people to do such a thing. However, these referral buttons come in the usual AdSense javascript form, so you can’t link to the site in text, unlike with other programmes. I would put a button into this post, but WordPress won’t have it. Don’t worry, they’re not exactly amazing.

In Google’s own words:

With our new referrals feature, you can increase your revenue while increasing your users’ awareness of useful products and services. By adding a referral button to your site, you can direct users to sign up for AdSense and monetize their web content, or to download Firefox with Google Toolbar and improve their web browsing experience.

While your users learn more, you can earn more — US $100 for every new AdSense publisher who earns $100 and up to $1 for every new Firefox user.

Hmm. Not entirely sure I’ll be partaking in this one.

This new release of referral buttons also came with an update to the Terms and Conditions, forced (as usual) upon users of the system.

I personally wonder if you are now allowed to encourage users to click on these links, especially when the Firefox buttons become available. I can’t see myself being able to promote them unless I am able to talk about Firefox and encourage people to click on the button.

The main thing with this referal scheme is it helps give Firefox a much needed push back into the spotlight.

The last few months have seen it’s momentum drop as security issues increasingly brought it back into the realm of ‘other browsers’.

Hopefully with Google’s help Firefox will once again start taking large bites out of IE’s traditional market!

The US $100 sounds exciting but it could take a while considering the person you refer has to go on to earn $100 first. I might consider this but may have to put more thought into it.

Please share with me your thoughts as to why you will not be partaking in on this.
